RCD330 Noname 187B - No Carplay Microphone

I installed the RCD330 Plus 187B with the rear USB-C kit and the MQB to PQ adapter in my 2017 Passat SE (USA). Almost everything works well, but the microphone does not work in CarPlay.
Unit information: Part number: 6RD035187B Hardware: 541 Software: 5614 Bluetooth: C210 CarPlay: 210.81
What works in wired CarPlay:
- Spotify audio
- Voicemail playback
- Waze voice prompts to me
What does not work in wired CarPlay:
- Phone calls connect, but there is no audio in either direction
- Siri does not hear me
- Waze voice input does not respond
- Phone calls work normally in both directions when the phone is connected by Bluetooth only, without CarPlay.
So the car microphone and wiring appear to be fine, and the problem seems to be how the microphone is passed to CarPlay.
The result is the same with the phone's Bluetooth on or off.
Is there a setting or firmware fix for this?
Open to any other suggestions on this because otherwise I'm super pleased with the result (still need to install the backup camera).
tried a USB-A wireless carplay dongle (2Air Carlinkit 5.0 Wireless CarPlay) connected to the usb port on the front of the headunit and siri and voice activation seems to be working. This doesn't work when i plug it into the USB-C port though which isn't ideal.
try a different cable...I found the USB-C port doesn't work for the microphone using the Apple factory braided USB-C cable. I used another USB-C cable and everything works just fine. Found the same thing with a different cable for the front USB-A port on the head unit. Now the carlinkit stays powered on when you plug it into the USB-C port which may create a battery drain issue but not sure how to tackle that.
Just sharing in case anyone else has this same problem.
